Comic Book Cover Typography from SUPERTYPE!

A while back, we posted a blog entry of some close up images of comic book typography documented by John Hilgart on his 4CP website. Little did we know that Hilgart also has another website devoted entirely to comic book cover typography called SUPERTYPE!. Scanned from vintage comic book covers, Hilgart has a huge collection of colorfully illustrated typography images. Below you’ll find just some of the work that can be found on SUPERTYPE!

4CP – Four Color Process – 20th Century Print Culture

By zooming in on and scanning different comic book illustrations, John Hilgart’s 4CP website exposes the four color process that is used to print comic books. With their tantalizing bursts of color, these close up scans can make for mysteriously abstract textures or ambiguous snapshots of dramatic comic book moments. Taken out of the context of their story, the close ups on 4CP illustrate the chaotic nature of the four color process and represent comic book illustrations as works of art from a new and exciting perspective.
