By zooming in on and scanning different comic book illustrations, John Hilgart’s 4CP website exposes the four color process that is used to print comic books. With their tantalizing bursts of color, these close up scans can make for mysteriously abstract textures or ambiguous snapshots of dramatic comic book moments. Taken out of the context of their story, the close ups on 4CP illustrate the chaotic nature of the four color process and represent comic book illustrations as works of art from a new and exciting perspective.

The results of an extensive exploration with shadows, the One Day Poem Pavilion demonstrates the poetic, transitory, site-sensitive and time-based nature of light and shadow.

Using a complex array of perforations, the pavilion’s surface allows light to pass through creating shifting patterns, which–during specific times of the year–transform into the legible text of a poem. The specific arrangements of the perforations reveal different shadow-poems according to the solar calendar: a theme of new-life during the summer solstice, a reflection on the passing of time at the period of the winter solstice. The time-based nature of the poem–and the visitor’s time-based encounters with it–allow viewers to have different experiences either seeing a stanza of the poem or getting the whole poem. All of these possible experiences are equally valuable and have meanings unique to the individual. This technique has the potential for producing particular effects and meanings within an architectural environment. Without the use of a source of power other than the sun, this project uses light and shadow to push the boundaries of communication and experiential delight.

Caldwell Tanner has illustrated a comical imagining of the major websites as superheroes. Facebook, Reddit, StumbleUpon, 4Chan, Tumblr, Amazon, Craigslist, Google, Google+, Yahoo, Huffington Post, Cheezburger all get the comic book treatment as “The Internet Justice League”.

Graphic designer, Felipe Aguilera makes use of vibrant colors and 3d shading techniques to create these stunning and clean looking typography works.

Ralph Steadman is probably most famous for his illustrations that appeared alongside the writings of gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Steadman’s work can also be found on the labels of the many different Flying Dog brewery beers. The sketchy and kinetic imagery in Steadman’s illustrations are, at times, complimented by his unique and sloppy looking lettering style. Check out some of his work below.

I love this speech by Conan O’Brien. Especially the last bit where he talks about cynicism. They are words that have always stuck with me. They show the depth of O’Brien’s personality. This is a very nicely done kinetic typography video by Jacob Gilbreath using the words from O’Brien’s farewell speech on The Tonite Show.

Adam Hayes aka Mr. Hayes is a graphic designer based in London, England. He has created designs for clients such as Toyota, Sony, the Guardian and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. Below are some of his hand rendered typography works.

Chris Tozer is a London Based graphic designer. His book, XYZ is a showcase of his typography that, as described on his website, “investigates the possibilities of giving type a spatial context. By exploring letterforms in relation to their environments, external influences, 3D forms and virtual realms, the book documents the challenges and creative potential of giving type a third dimension.”
